Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Is your heart hard? Often in the Bible a hard heart is mentioned as the cause of many troubles and trials. It is listed as the cause of wars, death, and even insanity among other things.

You may remember in the Old Testament where Pharaoh and the Egyptian's hearts were hard against the plight of the Hebrews. The consequences of this were the plagues and eventually the death of their first born. Young King Zedekiah being "stiff necked and hard hearted" led to the eventual destruction of Jerusalem. When Nebuchadnezzar became arrogant and hardened his heart against God he lost his throne and his mind became like an animal's mind.

In the New Testament Jesus also mentions our hearts being hard and calloused. He mentions hard hearts as a reason Moses allowed people to divorce. Paul mentions in Romans that our hard and impenitent hearts are storing up wrath for us on the day of wrath and because of that we will be rendered according to our deeds.

The consequences of hardening our hearts are severe and can be eternal. Let us pray we do not allow our hearts to be hard. Proverbs 28:14 (NKJV) tells us, "Happy is the man who is always reverent, But he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity."

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

With the New Year, come new resolutions to which we aspire. Many people seek to achieve their new resolutions, but find that reaching them is more difficult than expected. Such is life; we seek perfection or we aim for goals that are nearly impossible to reach. We make a second attempt, or a third, etc. Eventually, we get back to square one with a degree of disappointment, from the lack of success.

We cannot, in our human strength, do this on our own. We strive for righteousness on our own only to fail.

But if we make Him our focus, our priority, we will see the rest of our life fall into place. Grace is not just for our eternal security; it is for our daily walk as well. We can trust His Word:

"I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." Phil 4:13.

"Seek FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you as well." Mt.6:33

Let's make our goal to put Christ into perspective; through Him, all good things are possible.

December 2011 Prayer Calendar

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

With the coming of winter, life in certain ways seems to wither away. The harshness of the elements takes hold, and things seem dark. But with the gloomy weather, as a body of believers, we catch glimpse of the warm light that was provided by the birth of Christ.

"But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." Lk. 2: 10-14

With Jesus' birth began the opportunity for redemption of all.

May you all be blessed during this holiday season.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What a blessing it is to express love to one another in times of giving and charity. Let us express that love not out of selfish ambition, but through the love of Christ that is working in us.

As it is written:

"They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever." Ps. 112

"Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God." 2 Cor. 9: 10-12

It is this type of service that expresses God's unyielding love. Many blessings to you all,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

With this month we see the beginning of certain changes. The leaves begin to change color; the temperature is getting slightly cooler; some might make the decision to go on a long vacation down south. With certain changes within our daily lives or within changes of creation, we witness certain God qualities. God, in all His abounding love never changes, but witnessing His love provides the changes in our hearts that we may be more like Him.

"The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." Ps. 18:2

Though there are many changes going on in our daily lives, whether it is for the good, or for the bad, we take heart with the fact that we have a loving Savior who will never change. He is our foundation.

Many blessings to you all,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Fall weather is fast upon us, that fleeting season that so quickly turns bitter and cold. We have only a few short days left.In this life also we should always live like we have "only a few days left." We can never count our days for certain. We live among a people, proud and arrogant, who think by their food choices, their exercise, their supplements they can prolong their lives - for how long? Bigger barns and retirement accounts stave off - what, in reality?

Did not Jesus say in Luke "The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, "What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' 18 "Then he said, "This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."' 20 "But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself'" Nothing comforting here.

To all our praying brothers and sisters,

This month we will look at love for one another even in difficult circumstances. Loving those who are strangers and aliens in our country, loving those who spitefully use us, choosing to love and honor those who spit at us literally or figuratively, all these are difficult hurdles. It is too easy to justify our own retaliation rather than to go the "way of the cross," the way of sacrifice and denying oneself. Love, Jesus' way, is not easy.

Think on these things as you read this month.

(Written and verses chosen by Kyle Neilson, a student at Albemarle High School and a member of Maple Grove Christian Church.)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This month our focus will be on verses of encouragement and strength for our daily lives. Many are the words from King David who prayed daily that God would give him the strength and wisdom to be a better man for the good of his nation. Though most of us do not have the worries of a king, we can all take comfort in the knowledge that our God will give us the strength to carry on when we turn our hearts to Him. He is always willing and waiting to listen to our hearts as we turn over our troubles to Him.

Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD."
Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, that is built as a city that is compact together;
To which the tribes go up, even the tribes of the LORD
To give thanks to the name of the LORD.
For there thrones were set for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you.
"May peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces."
For the sake of my brothers and my friends, I will now say, "May peace be within you."
For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good.

This month we will pray for Israel and Jerusalem specifically.

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"

37 Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:24-40

As we read through this month's Bible verses, remember that God loves us very much, and what He wants more than anything is not our money, our strength, or our hard work, but our love in return!
